More than 100 million people, comprising at minimum 15 million children, currently use e-cigarettes, driving a fresh trend of nicotine habit, according to current international public health data.

Youth are, on average, nine times more likely than grown-ups to use e-cigarettes, according to existing international data.

Vaping devices are driving a "new wave" of nicotine dependency, stated a prominent health expert. "These devices are advertised as damage limitation but, truthfully, are addicting youth on nicotine at younger ages and risk compromising decades of improvement."

"Millions of individuals are quitting, or refraining from tobacco consumption because of tobacco regulation measures by nations throughout the planet," the official said.

"As a reaction to this strong advancement, the tobacco business is fighting back with novel nicotine items, aggressively focusing on young people. Administrations must take action more rapidly and stronger in enacting tested tobacco-control policies," the representative added.

The vaping numbers are an estimate since some countries - 109 in total, and many in Africa and Asian regions - lack information.

Based on the analysis, as of this past February this year, at least 86 million e-cigarette users were grown-ups, primarily in high-income countries.

And at bare minimum 15 million teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15 already vape, according to surveys from 123 states.

Although several states have attempted to implement e-cigarette policies to address underage vaping in the past few years, by the close of 2024, 62 countries even now had no measure in operation, and 74 states had no age restriction at which e-cigarettes may be acquired, says the health authority.

Simultaneously, tobacco use has been decreasing - from an estimated 1.38 billion users in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024.

Frequency of tobacco usage among women dropped the largest - from 11% in 2010 to 6.6% in 2024.

Among males, the drop was from 41.4% in 2010 to 32.5% in 2024.

But one in five of mature individuals worldwide yet consumes tobacco.
