The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
