Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's expected for questions to be raised about his future after a further convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth defeat in twelve matches, representing the club's poorest streak after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received significant support from the top,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to change things and secure a win of course but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it's expected that people question you.”
He continued, “I accept my role. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a difficult position but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Talks with Club Management
Upon being questioned to expand on his conversations with the club's leadership, the head coach said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard conversations we have I perceive the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat yet so we'll see.”
Familiar Failings and Squad Reaction
Slot expressed regret over recurring failings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, namely poor finishing and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his view of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder stated.
“It’s just not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the side I follow. I support them, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I've not seen a Liverpool team going through a period like this with outcomes like these.”
He stated, “But we continue to wear that badge on our chest. And as long as it is taken away, we’re always going to battle.”
“We will attempt to get this team back to where it needs to be, show everyone once more what this club is about and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and it needs to change.”
