Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the both parties.
Key Points in Talks
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- Post-war management of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere seems like home any longer and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist a participant stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the evening comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.
"My family are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of several people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis indicated another two victims had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south, medics reported.
