'Enduring a Horrific Ordeal': Loved Ones of Missing Young People Await Information After Alpine Inferno
The loved ones of young people unaccounted for after a tragic fire at a establishment in a Swiss alpine town are enduring an excruciating period of uncertainty for confirmed information and requesting clues about their loved ones publicly.
The fire devastated the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the middle of the night of the first day of the year. Verified images show the ceiling igniting as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to identify the victims of the disaster, which resulted in the death of 40 people and injured another over a hundred. Officials stated on Friday that the majority of the those hurt have been identified, with the process continuing to locate the other six.
In the waiting period, relatives have been taking to the internet to appeal for information about their loved ones who were at the bar that night.
Appeals for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are not yet determined, according to an public plea from his mother.
The resident of Lutry near the city, explained to a publication that she had gone back to the city to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his father did the equivalent search in Bern, but did not locate him.
"This is a living nightmare, a horror. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. It's horrific," she said.
She continued that some of his friends had been discovered with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "There are no words; they went through hell."
The Italy's government has indicated that a number of of its young people are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, originally from Italy but now residing in the UAE.
The national sporting body has said that he is deceased, without mentioning the tragedy, paying tribute to a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and true sportsmanship."
His father, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An representative has stated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also among the missing. His mother told reporters that he had been on vacation but had gone out with friends and ended up at the bar.
"A companion said they fled after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
One of his educators said, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, coupled with great responsibility. Often ask if help out."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss nationality but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also at the bar on that night, according to media.
