Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters went into the house close to the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were arrested at the site and a third person who escaped following the incident was located shortly later. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene displayed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the residence was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast immediately struck our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
