Anthony Barry Explains The Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Currently, his attention is fixed supporting Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.

Metoric Climb

The coach's journey is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he established a standing for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the top as he describes it.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their methods include player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and rejects terms such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he declares. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We have 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that the style of play must reflect all the positives of English football,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the robustness, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data currently. They can organize – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings he could find to improve his talks. Including a prison locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry on to his staff with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he brought Barry over from Chelsea to work together again. English football's governing body view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
