Addressing the Checkout Assistant That Made Me Absolutely Speechless – My Hat's Off to You

It was a weekend morning, and I found myself grumpy enough, topping off my mum’s car. This was a common fuel stop that also functions as a supermarket, which often leads of joining a queue customers carrying goods of pricey provisions. It's an awful situation to happen when your only desire is to get gasoline and leave. Terrible.

My position was fourth in the queue. There was only cashier operating, a youthful clerk. There was something unusual to her presence. When the faffer at the head of the line had at last settled for his Viakal, his pastry, and his box of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier wish him an excellent day. Strange. Could be I misunderstood, or perhaps she spoke and used a mocking tone. I pondered if she could even be a supporter in my fight against faff, sharing my contempt for people who hold up straightforward customers including me.

Advancing next, becoming the third customer. The new leader of our line completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” No, actually, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here wishes anyone such a cheerful phrase, or simply a good day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter many Americans knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not working in petrol stations or anywhere else.

Now I stood second. Behind a poor older woman embroiled in a right old battle with her basket, her purchases, her purse and her rewards card. It went on for ever. When she was done, she as well was wished a wonderful day. Definitely from the US. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious in her direction, to check for that reaction as they gaze at you, stoically, and state very earnestly: “That is quite humorous.” But I couldn’t think of anything hilarious to say.

I just had to settle the genuine warmth – or an impersonation of it, essentially the same as no different – as she gazed directly into my eyes, piercingly, and bid me to have a great day. My spirits lifted. It was a good thing.
