A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
No less than 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were arrested.
Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the security action, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is regarded as the central command of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Community members have described the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed throughout the region.
Criminal Expansion
The Red Command group has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the raid, along with multiple guns.
Operation Background
The combined action by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
